I was just walking through the woods on a cool March evening when I walked by a bus station on my way home. While I was walking by, I saw a tiny black figure outside the entrance.   I was curious, so I walked closer.  I had no worries, since I was well trained in self defense.  Walking closer, what once seemed like a black blob came into focus.  What I saw was shocking.  It was a little boy, completely covered in a black robe, so only his face and a few tufts of hair were showing.  With his blond hair, he was so incredibly little.  He was shivering.  I walked up to him, and held out my hand.

“Hello! What's your name?” I tried to be comforting and gentle.

“NO! Go away!!!” He shouted, looking away with tears in his eyes.

“Wait.. Where's your mommy?” I questioned.  There was no way I was leaving this kid by himself.

“I don't have one of those things!” He curled up into a ball, shivering worse than before.  “I was an accident.”

“What do you mean by that?”

“I was created from a magic spell went wrong.” He said.  Magic? That was quite rare to hear of in these parts.  As a matter of fact, it was just folklore.  This little boy was lucky he found a young wizard in training such as me.

“It's okay, I can take care of you. I know magic. I won't hurt you, I promise.” I tried to be as persuasive as possible so this boy wouldn't refuse a warm bed and a nice cup of hot chocolate.  He was so scared and confused.

“Really??” He was cautious, as everyone in this situation would. “You won't hurt me?”

“No of course not.” I took out my wand, hoping he would recognize it.  “See? I am a wizard.”

“Okay, miss.” The boy finally outstretched his tiny arms for me, and I scooped him right up, hoping to bring warmth into his body.

“See? I'll take care of you now.”

“Are you my mama? I don't have one.”

“No, I'll just be your sister okay?”

“Okay!”

“What's your name?” I asked.

“Mathew!”  He smiled softly.

“I'm ____, okay?”  I mirrored his smile.

“Okay!”

When I arrived home with little Mathew, I set him on my kitchen counter and went into my cabinets in search of a hot chocolate  mix.  Once I had fixed a cup of steaming liquid, I handed it right to the little boy.

“Here.” I said. “Drink this.”

“Thank you, sis.” He politely stated back.  I noticed his clothes were damp and clinging to his chubby arms.

“Here, let me take this robe and wash it for you, okay? It'll be warm when it comes out of the drier.”

“Okay.” With Mathew's consent, I unwrapped the robe from his body.  What I saw next was quite shocking.  This boy had cat-like ears along with a fluffy tail.  They were one shade darker than his light blond hair, and were a bit damp. A creature such as him was very rare even in the magic world.

“So you're a Neko, huh?” I said to myself.

“Yes, I am.  It was an accident, though.” Mathew responded halfheartedly.

I smiled back at him.  “Well, don't worry about that anymore. I'll take care of you, alright?”

“Thanks for taking care of me.” Mathew smiled wide this time.  I was glad I found him, it was unexpected but, I was still happy about all the same.

I decided to give Mathew a bath that night and have him sleep in bed with me, since I didn't have an extra.   I woke up the next morning to see Mathew staring at me with wide eyes.

“What do you need, Mathew?” I asked.

“Breakfast.” He said “Can I have pancakes, please?”

“Sure!” I answered back enthusiastically, today was the day I'd teach Mathew his first magic spell.

After our pancake breakfast, I took Mathew back into my secluded backyard.  I don't have any neighbors, which was  perfect for when I practiced magic.  I was going to teach him how to protect himself, step number one in being a wizard.

“What are we doing?” Mathew asked with wide curious eyes.

“Today I will be teaching your first magic spell! It's called the shield block. It's a magic shield that blocks enemy attacks.”

“Ooooh I wanna know how!” He was suddenly excited.  I smiled handing him a wand.

“Take your wand, and make a circle in the air.”

“Like this?”  Mathew smiled, making squares in the air.  I laughed.

“No, No. Those are squares. Try a circle like this.”  I demonstrated once again for the tiny boy.
“Oh okay! Abracadabra!” He laughed twirling his wand around in the shape of an eight.

“Mathew! You are so silly!” I laughed and took his hand making a circle with it.  The spell worked and a bubble formed around us,  protecting us from danger, not that there was any prominent.

“Wow! This is so cool!” The small boy's eyed gleamed with fascination and he turned to hug me. “I love you, sis!”

“I love you too, Mathew!” I smiled and hugged him.

He was going to be a fun little boy to live with, and he would certainly change my life for the better.
